Thursday, August 20, at 6:00pm EDT

Join the Studio Museum Harlem for an intimate Instagram live conversation between artist Sadie Barnette (2014–15 artist in residence) and Legacy Russell, Associate Curator, Exhibitions.

Barnette’s ongoing collaboration with her father, Rodney Barnette, remains a pivotal site of intimacy and creative inspiration for the artist. Rodney Barnette founded the Compton, CA chapter of the Black Panther Party. From 1990–93 he established and operated the New Eagle Creek Saloon, the first black-owned gay bar in San Francisco. Barnette’s recent drawings, sculptures, and installations have incorporated the 500-page FBI surveillance file kept on her father. Barnette and Russell will discuss queer histories, familial legacies, and Black futurity, as represented in Barnette’s practice.

To watch the talk, visit the Studio Museum’s Instagram page at 6:00 pm EDT (3:00 pm PDT).
