Maria Hupfield’s newly developed work titled 4 Bodies 1 Screen brings together three invited artists - T.J. Dedeaux-Norris, Ayana Evans, and Esther Neff - to join in a public platform for collaborative engagement and performance art. Working from an agreed upon score in four parts, the artists will introduce a combination of improvised, individual, and group led movement that considers the full body in relation to the screen. Characteristic of her live interdisciplinary performances, Hupfield aims to craft a visually rich and multi-sensory atmosphere for an active exchange of ideas across cultures, disciplines, and borders. Her practice is invested in collaboration as a means to sustaining trust and support, introduced and developed during her time spent with the Brooklyn Performance Art community between 2010 and 2019.

Bios

T.J. Dedeaux-Norris fka Tameka Jenean Norris was born in Guam and received their undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles before graduating with an MFA from Yale University School of Art. Dedeaux-Norris has recently participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals including at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, NC; Yerba Buena Museum, San Francisco, CA; Prospect.3 Biennial, New Orleans, LA; The Walker Museum, Minneapolis, MN; Performa 13; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston, TX; The Studio Museum, Harlem, NY; Rotterdam Film Festival, Rotterdam,Netherlands; Sundance Film Festival, New York, NY; Mission Creek Festival, Iowa City, IA among many others. Dedeaux-Norris has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Fountainhead Residency, Grant Wood Colony Fellowship, The MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and Yaddo. They are the 2017 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a 2018 National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, a 2019-2020 Pollock-Krasner Foundation grantee, and is currently tenure track Assistant Professor at University of Iowa.

Ayana Evans is a NYC based artist. She received her MFA in painting from Temple University and her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. Evans has performed at El Museo del Barrio, The Barnes Foundation, The Bronx Museum, Newark Museum, the Queens Museum and countless public locations for her guerilla style performances. Her international work includes shows at FIAP performance festival in Martinique, Tiwani Contemporary in London, and Ghana'a Chale Wote festival. Evans was a 2018 Fellow at EFA’s Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, 2017-2018 awardee of the Franklin Furnace Fund for performance art, and a 2018 NYFA Fellow. Her recent press includes: The New York Times, artnet, New York Magazine's The Cut, Hyperallergic, and Bomb Magazine. Evans is currently an adjunct professor at Brown University.

Maria Hupfield is a transdisciplinary artist working in performance and media arts. She was awarded the Hnatyshyn Foundation prize for outstanding achievement by a Canadian mid-career artist (2018) and is an inaugural resident of the Surf Point Foundation Residency 2020. Hupfield is a Guest Curator for the Artist of Color Council Movement Research at Judson Church Winter 2020 Season, and a Lucas Artists Fellowship in Visual Arts, Architecture & Design, Montalvo Arts Centre (2019-2020). Her solo Nine Years Towards The Sun at the Heard Museum, Phoenix Winter (2019) focuses on exhibiting performance as living culture and follows her first major Canadian traveling institutional solo exhibition The One Who Keeps on Giving a production of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto (2017-2019). Her work has shown at the Museum of Arts and Design, BRIC, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, represented Canada at SITE Santa Fe (2016), and travelled nationally in Canada with Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture (2012-14); with recent performances at the National Gallery of Canada. Hupfield is an off-rez citizen of Wasauksing First Nation, Ontario, Anishinaabek Nation, and a recently appointed Canadian Research Chair in Transdisciplinary Indigenous Arts at the University of Toronto (2019-2024).

Esther Neff's work involves intentional institutions, temporary collectives, co-operatives, and other forms of performative organization as well as operas, books, conferences, and performance art. Neff is the founder of PPL (Panoply Performance Laboratory) and is currently working as part of MARSH (Materializing & Activating Radical Social Habitus) in St. Louis, MO (Mound City). They will begin a PhD program at CUNY in the Fall of 2020.
